Case study assignments test whether you can apply theory to a real situation. Examiners reward clear analysis and practical recommendations โ not long retelling of the case.
Before you write
- Read the case twice: first for the story, second for facts, numbers and problems.
- Underline the main problem and its symptoms.
- Read the assignment question and marking rubric carefully.
Standard structure
- Introduction โ the organisation, the situation and what the report will do (a short paragraph).
- Problem identification โ the core problem and the symptoms, supported by facts from the case.
- Analysis โ apply relevant models: SWOT, PESTLE, Porterโs Five Forces, the marketing mix, motivation theories and so on.
- Alternative solutions โ 2โ3 realistic options with pros and cons.
- Recommendation โ the best option and why.
- Implementation plan โ who does what, when, and with what resources.
- Conclusion.
- References.
Tips for higher marks
- Use theory to explain, not just to decorate โ say what the model shows about this case.
- Support claims with evidence from the case and from academic sources.
- Keep recommendations specific and realistic (budget, timeline, responsibility).
- Use headings and short paragraphs.
- Reference correctly in the style your teacher asks (see our APA guide).
Common mistakes
- Retelling the whole case instead of analysing it.
- Recommendations that do not solve the identified problem.
- No references, or only websites.
