Which Statistical Test Should I Use for My Thesis? (Simple Chart)

A plain-language chart for choosing the right statistical test: t-test, ANOVA, chi-square, correlation or regression โ€” based on your question and type of data.

Which Statistical Test Should I Use for My Thesis? (Simple Chart)

Choosing a statistical test feels complicated, but it usually comes down to two questions: what are you trying to find out, and what type of data do you have? Try our free interactive test chooser too.

Step 1: Know your data types

  • Categorical (nominal) โ€” groups with no order: gender, department, yes/no.
  • Ordinal โ€” ordered categories: education level, single Likert items.
  • Continuous (scale) โ€” numbers with meaningful distances: age, marks, income, and the average score of a multi-item Likert scale (commonly treated as continuous).

Step 2: What is your question?

Your questionDataTest (parametric)Alternative (non-parametric)
Compare 2 independent groups (e.g. male vs female)Group + continuousIndependent samples t-testMannโ€“Whitney U
Compare the same people twice (before / after)Continuous ร—2Paired samples t-testWilcoxon signed-rank
Compare 3+ groups (e.g. three departments)Group + continuousOne-way ANOVA (+ post-hoc)Kruskalโ€“Wallis
Is there a relationship between two variables?Continuous ร—2Pearson correlationSpearman correlation
Does X predict / affect Y?Continuous outcomeSimple / multiple linear regressionโ€”
Predict a yes/no outcomeBinary outcomeBinary logistic regressionโ€”
Are two categorical variables associated?Categorical ร—2Chi-square test of independenceFisherโ€™s exact (small samples)

Step 3: Check assumptions

Parametric tests assume roughly normal data (or a reasonably large sample), similar variances between groups and independent observations. Check normality with skewness/kurtosis or the Shapiroโ€“Wilk test, and Leveneโ€™s test for equal variances. If assumptions fail badly, use the non-parametric alternative.

Examples

  • โ€œIs there a difference in job satisfaction between public and private school teachers?โ€ โ†’ independent t-test.
  • โ€œDoes social support predict stress among nurses?โ€ โ†’ simple linear regression.
  • โ€œIs smoking status associated with gender?โ€ โ†’ chi-square.

Mediation and moderation

If your framework has a mediator (X โ†’ M โ†’ Y) or moderator, regression-based approaches such as Hayesโ€™ PROCESS macro in SPSS, or structural equation modelling (SEM), are commonly used.

Decide your tests while writing your objectives โ€” not after collecting data. Then your questionnaire will collect exactly the type of data those tests need.
